Weekly tips and encouragement to help you handle stress, stay fit, and find joy in parenting

Tainted by Television

When I was a student at Stanford University oh so many years ago I wrote a paper for a broadcast communications class on violence on television. I remember it because it was one of the first papers I wrote while there and  I wondered how I would do in this new environment. The professor gave me an A- and wrote that the minus came because I didn't actually solve the problem. Solve the problem? They expected me to actually solve a major social problem?  That was the first inkling I had that I was in school to actually impact the world. Truly I was flabbergasted that anyone expected me to solve a problem of such magnitude. Sadly I never did  and neither did you and we all know television has only grown more violent and more...

Children Are a Blessing from the Lord

I spent Monday in a courtroom, in the jury box, waiting to see if I would serve. The case involved a young man of 22 who was being tried for a crime he committed several years ago. Straight out of college I used to work with juvenile felons . I tried to help them find their way to a different life. Believe me, I have stories. It's probably for that reason that I was passed over for serving.

I'll admit I was relieved. While I was listening to the attorneys sort through our qualifications to serve there was some place I would rather have been.  My oldest son, Dane, was on his way to the airport to pick up my middle son, Skyler, who was returning from Taiwan. I was anxious to see him and hear about his adventures.  He was doing a...

Finding Your Reason for Fat Loss

A personal trainer can help you with the how of fat loss by designing a program that fits your abilities, time constraints, and other limitations. They'll try to make your sessions as enjoyable as possible. But one of the keys to success must come from you. It involves finding your reason for losing fat and getting in shape. It has to do with knowing exactly what you expect will be better in your life once you lose the weight.

Truthfulness is essential with this step. It is after all a private matter. You don't have to tell anyone. If you want to be able to wear a certain style, play with your kids or grandkids, get noticed by someone, or any other goal that means something to you then nurture that desire by remembering it when you are...

Good Intentions and Fat Loss

You've seen the title so let me say right off the bat that good intentions are not enough when it comes to fat loss. You absolutely must take consistent action. That said, I'm speaking to you about this on the day after what is known to be the second most calorie filled day in the U.S.

Thanksgiving is first but Super Bowl Sunday also has the distinction of being a day of consuming calories in a form particularly detrimental to weight loss. The liquids consumed during the Super Bowl may also have something to do with about 6% of the work force calling in sick the Monday after.

So that's why we are talking about good intentions. If you planned on throwing out your fat-loss plans for a day in order to enjoy the party then great. Your...

Masterminds Know Why You Should Get Abs

I’m flying home from Connecticut today after spending a few days with a mastermind group composed of some of the leaders in the fitness industry. To illustrate just how interesting these collegues are I’ll just say that one of our group trained a former president. Later I’ll tell you something remarkable about that story.

In a mastermind group you take turns revealing to the group what your current projects are. I have created Exercising Values to give families a comprehensive workout system for the entire family that integrates character lessons for the children and diet and weight loss tips for the parents. I want this information to help as many families as possible so I benefit from the insights of fellow...

5 Principals to Success in Fat Loss and Muscle Gain

What does it really take to be successful in fat loss or in transforming your appearance through gaining muscle? When I reflect over my most successful clients a few common characteristics stand out. Maybe this list will help you reflect on whether or not you are ready to do what it takes to get the body you dream of having.

These success stories did these five things:

1. They told themselves the truth about why they wanted to make a change. It would be great if preventing future disease did it for everyone but if the reason you want to lose that roll around the middle is to have a chance with the cute brunette then that is the goal you need to focus on.

Maybe you should have more than a vague unease about the state of your health but if...

Fat Loss Information You Can Trust

One of the great things about writing Exercising Values is that it has put me in touch with some of the most dedicated personal trainers and health and fitness professionals at work around the world. If anything, most of us are bombarded with too much information that often contradicts the last thing you learned. So I've decided to pass on to you some of the people I trust for fitness information. Today I'll introduce you to Jon Benson. I like Jon because he's not afraid to tell you what has worked for him even if others can't figure out how he does t. I also like him because he has faced some of the same obstacles I have such as low-thyroid and age-related changes. Now he hasn't produced six kids so I'm sure there are things he doesn't...

Fat Loss in 2009

January is the month when those around you will ever so briefly support you in your body transformation goals and other goals as well for that matter. My family used to own a bakery so I know exactly how long this will last. Bakery businesses boom over the holidays and then slow way down in Jan. with a slight increase in the first two weeks of Feb. then ... bam! all deals are off from Valentine's Day on. So odds are you have four to six weeks when you will be surrounded by people attempting to lose weight, exercise more, stop smoking, etc. By all means take advantage of this.

If you can actually accomplish your goal in as little as six weeks then start as soon as possible. If your goals are going to take a bit longer brace yourself for...

Strangers and Friends

What makes life bearable is the random acts of kindness from strangers and the steady flow of love from friends. Today I experienced both. The stranger that went more than the extra mile to help my dog and the friends who offered the kindness of words and more than that. Knowing that a friend truly understands how you feel doesn't really require words. It's just the comfort of knowing someone understands.

Surrounding yourself with people with great character is so important for your sanity and for your growth. Instilling these values in our children is one of life's greatest challenges and rewards. Teaching them to treat a stranger with the respect and care of a friend is so important. Yet I...

Remembering Lance

Most years I ride my bike across Iowa on what is called Ragbrai. Ragbrai is unique among bike rides. It is best summed up by a friend of mine who observed it is so amazing to spend a week
with 20,000 happy people. If you just want a break from everything I highly recommend this annual ride. With its frequent stops for beer slides or pie anyone can do it.

Two years ago for the first time Lance Armstrong decided to try Ragbrai instead of the Tour de France. When addressing the crowd I remember him saying, "I just can't figure out how you people can ride all day and drink all night." A woman in the crowd shouted,"we train". And so it goes.

A lot of people kept to their regular Ragbrai rituals of...
